Where the absurdities of everyday life receive the attention they never requested.
Welcome. We weren’t expecting anyone.
Nobody remembers why this department was established. Several people have tried to close it. Unfortunately, the person responsible for closures is on annual leave. He’s been on annual leave since 1987.
In the meantime, please make yourself comfortable. Not in that chair. That’s the manager’s.
Meet Mrs Unnecessary
A lady with a sharp tongue, a pink hat and very little patience for nonsense.
Nobody remembers hiring Mrs Unnecessary. She arrived one Tuesday wearing a pink hat, carrying a handbag and looking deeply disappointed.
“Is this the Unnecessary Department?” she asked.
“Splendid. I’ve been looking for somewhere my talents would be completely wasted.”
* Mrs Unnecessary has no particular qualifications. This has never stopped anyone else.
A one-minute silent comedy with music and vintage title cards. In sepia scenes, Mrs Unnecessary wears a pink hat, points to empty chairs while holding an “Attendance: Excellent” clipboard, and sits alone at a long meeting table. She presents a large question mark on a blackboard, then returns to her typewriter. A final notice calls for a follow-up meeting to establish what was agreed. There is no spoken dialogue.
A sepia silent comedy about fitting in. A woman in a pink hat encounters a “Be Yourself Week” notice with compulsory attendance. Paperwork labels her “Too quiet”, “Too different” and “Not a team player”. Another sign celebrates difference “Subject to approval”. A closing title says everyone was encouraged to be themselves, with some restrictions, before “The End”.
